2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe announced

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid has been discussed for months, hinted at for as long and has now finally broken cover. Details on the ‘green’ Jeep have finally been released and shows us most of what we need to know.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid continues the look and feel of the standard model. Most importantly, it will also continue the off road ability as the hybrid motor still earns the Wrangler the all-important Trail Rated moniker.

“Off-road capabilities and on-road performance were our top priorities,” said Mike Wiacek, FCA’s chief engineer of electrified vehicles. Significantly, he noted, that at the low speeds off-roaders run at, the 4xe will “allow for hours of all-electric operation.”

The 4xe is part of Jeep’s plan to electrify its entire lineup over the coming years. While it uses a gas engine, it’s a genuine step forward in reducing our dependence on fossil fuel and a demonstration that going green doesn’t mean giving up fun.

“Our Jeep 4xe vehicles will be the most efficient, responsible and capable that the brand has ever created,” said Christian Meunier, Global President of Jeep Brand – FCA. “We are committed to make Jeep the greenest SUV brand.

“The electrification of the Jeep lineup will allow commuters to travel solely on electric power, delivering an efficient and fun on-road experience and offering an ability to enjoy even more Jeep capability off-road in nearly complete silence.”

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe looks and feels just like a standard Wrangler. There is very little to choose between the two model types except a small blue 4xe badge and blue trim elements like those on the tow hook. Aside from that, this is a full blooded Wrangler in every way.

Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors. The motors connect to a 400-volt, 17-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that nestles under the rear seats. All combine to generate 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

There will be three driving modes, Hybrid, Electric and eSave. Each provides varying levels of power in return for lower battery use. The motor uses electric to power and the gas engine to charge. The batteries are capable of 25 miles of electric only drive before needing the engine.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes with regenerative braking to help charge. This braking can work on two wheels or all four depending on the driving mode.

To begin with, the new electric Wrangler will have three trims, 4xe, Sahara 4xe and Rubicon 4xe. Base and Sahara will have permanent AWD, Dana axles, a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case and Trac-Loc limited-slip differential.

The Rubicon will have Rock-Trac 4x4 system, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, a 77.2:1 crawl ratio and electric sway-bar disconnect.

Jeep says the Wrangler 4xe sometime next year.
