The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Review

The big Jeep has a long and illustrious history. While it wasn’t the first SUV, it was the vehicle that defined what an SUV would be and still has a huge influence over the market today. So, we view the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L with great anticipation!
Any time a new version of a signature vehicle comes along, we wait with baited breath. There’s a lot riding on its success, but there are no worries here.
L for Long
The new Cherokee L is an SUV that takes what has gone before and adds 15” of length to the chassis. This allows for an extra row of seating, making this a true three row vehicle.
A standard length Cherokee is on the way too but won’t be here until later in the summer.
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L has a new front end with familiar grille, large lower sill, narrower lights and LED running lights. The chassis is longer and wider and has more ground clearance too.
The profile is smooth and the roof flat while the rear has a bulbous quality around the midline and the lights. It’s a handsome SUV with squared off wheel arches and the ground clearance and overhangs that tell you this will still happily go off road.
Inside, the Cherokee has been transformed. We now have real wood, real leather, real suede and none of that fake stuff. The design is pared back but offers more.
The flowing dashboard and centre stack is a nice touch. It’s driver-centric and keeps switches and buttons sensible while providing a ton of options.
All three rows of seats have lots of head and leg room, some form of storage and a comfortable feel.
Engine and drivetrain
The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L has two engine options right now. The ever-present 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 that delivers 290 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque and a 5.7-litre V8 that delivers 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque.
Both use an eight speed automatic transmission to drive the rear or all wheels.
A hybrid option is on the way but won’t be here for a little while.
Depending on the model you buy, you’ll have the option of Quadralift air suspension, the Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited-slip differential.
You can also get infrared night vision, head-up display, OTA updates for Uconnect, 506-watt Alpine audio system, Active Ride Assist, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection and park assist.
We haven’t been able to drive a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L yet but we cannot imagine it will be anything but awesome.
Part of the brief for the new Cherokee was to make it bigger while still having off road chops. The high ride height and low overhangs should see to some of that while the optional Quadra-Drive systems should also help.
