Bronco and Maverick Win American Utility Vehicle of the Year

Bronco and Maverick Win American Utility Vehicle of the Year

Last week Ford one two of the three categories of the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The Bronco won utility of the year and the Maverick won truck of the year.

The Honda Civic won car of the year too.

The North American Utility Vehicle of the Year is one of the more relevant awards ceremonies. It has been around since 1994 and assesses vehicles on a wide range of categories.

The Ford Bronco won North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. It beat Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Genesis GV70 to win out.

The Ford Maverick won North American Truck of the Year and beat the Rivian R1T and the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Both were up against tough competition but emerged victorious. Mainly because, both models are actually excellent vehicles!

The 2022 Ford Maverick

As we have given the Fords Bronco a lot of page space over the past months, it’s only fair to let the 2022 Ford Maverick share the limelight.

The design of the 2022 Ford Maverick is smooth and rounded. It’s not an imposing profile like the F-150, but much lower key. I think it works well and should appeal to a much wider audience.

The front end is modest, with a decent grille and chrome bar, the lights look complicated but look pretty good once illuminated.

The panels are all simple and unadorned with rounded edges and very little detailing. Yet the design looks and feels better due to that simplicity.

Interior space

Inside, the cabin is a nice place to be. It has four seats and four doors with nice materials throughout. Finishing is of a high quality, technology is generous and while this is no Lincoln, it’s a decent interior for a Ford truck.

Storage is generous, with cubbies and little storage pockets everywhere, which is a nice touch.

There’s an 8” touchscreen up front with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and WiFi hotspot. You can also have SiriusXM satellite radio if you like.

Under the hood

The 2022 Ford Maverick can come with a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine or a 2.0-litre four.

The 2.5-litre comes with electric motor for a combined output of 191 hp. The 2.0-litre four comes with 250 hp and an 8 speed automatic transmission.

The hybrid FWD only and comes with a CVT transmission while the gas engine can come as AWD and a standard automatic.

Power delivery is decent on both engines, with extra early push from the hybrid. Neither will leave you wanting unless you’re maxing out the towing capacity.

Overall, the 2022 Ford Maverick is a small truck with a big heart. It’s funky, capable and can haul up to 680 kg and tow up to 907 kg. Add the optional Towing Pack and that tow capacity increases to 1814 kg.

That’s a lot for a small truck!
