It seems Ram are very busy right now. Not only are they testing the 2019 Ram 1500 on the streets but are also planning ahead to what might be either the 2020 Ram 2500 or 3500 too.

With the 1500 due to show next January, it is natural that eyes are looking further ahead to the following couple of years. The guys over at Motor Authority have several spy shots of what looks like a heavier duty Ram truck which is currently being assumed to be the 2500 or 3500. As these two trucks aren’t due for an overhaul yet, the 2020 date is somewhat tentative.

As you might expect, the design does not veer too much from the current look. Truck buyers are habitual, preferring to stay within a certain comfort zone and appearance. A truck should look capable and rugged, yet also modern and attractive in a masculine sort of way.

There are also obvious limitations with trucks. They have to be a certain shape and have certain characteristics and there is certainly still an appetite for bigger is better.

The spy shots don’t tell us much thanks to the camouflage but we can see a modified light design and what looks to be a slightly wider, taller and longer chassis. That could be the camouflage again, but it does look bigger. Aside from that, we can’t actually see a great deal but as a truck fan, I couldn’t help but show the new design.

What else can we expect from a 2020 Ram 2500 or 3500?
It would be reasonable to think the existing 6.7-litre Cummins turbodiesel engine to be present and correct. It has gone down very well indeed thanks to its 930 lb-ft of torque and ability to tow significant loads. It is also likely that gasoline V8s will also feature. The current 5.7-litre and 6.4-litre models are likely to also feature in one form or another.

The current automatic transmission is performing exceptionally well, so it is very likely that this will drive these new trucks. The current chassis and suspension setup with optional air suspension will also likely remain. Both offer a very composed ride and balances the truck enough so it is easy to handle whether fully loaded or empty.

It is all pure speculation right now though as we know nothing about what is in store for the 2020 Ram 2500 and 3500. Hopefully we won’t have too long to wait to find out!
