Ram have announced the EcoDiesel is making a comeback for the 1500. A completely reworked engine will return to the Ram truck by Q4 this year, hoping to steal more sales from the big three rivals.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will use a revised 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine that is said to deliver 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. As numbers mean a lot to truck owners, you may be interested to know that this out-torques the Chevy Silverado (277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque) and the Ford F-150 (250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque). As both of these are sales leaders, Ram hopes to steal some sales with these figures.
While horsepower is on par with the competition, torque is where it’s at for trucks. As torque relates directly to towing ability, the more torque you have, the more you can tow. It’s the headline figure for truck owners. That’s why Ram have concentrated on that over horsepower. That doesn’t mean horsepower isn’t a huge influence in buying decisions because it is. Just less so with trucks than with cars.
This new engine means a fully outfitted 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will be able to tow up to 12,560 pounds. That’s a significant amount of weight for a light truck.
With more torque than the competition, Ram hopes this would be enough for light truck buyers to switch brands. The company has already won over other buyers with its reworked Cummins diesel and it is hoping to do the same with the EcoDiesel.
The new engine has a new water-cooled turbocharger to thank for some of that extra torque. With new variable geometry turbine technology and a redesigned cylinder head, the engine is now more efficient and responsive as well as offering more torque.
Ram have also said that the Gen 3 EcoDiesel as it is known uses dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and a graphite iron block to help increase strength and therefore longevity.
They also said:
‘The new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is America's most powerful half-ton diesel pickup, following up on Ram's Heavy Duty torque leadership and achieving what no other manufacturer has, with up to 480 lb.-ft. of torque in a 3.0-litre engine. The all-new EcoDiesel engine and our eTorque mild-hybrid powertrain technologies deliver the highest available fuel efficiency for our Ram 1500 customers.’
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel should be available last quarter 2019 as an option. Prices and figures will be released closer to the time.
