2020 Mazda3 Premium Package Automobile All-Stars winner

2020 Mazda3 Premium Package Automobile All-Stars winner

Automobile magazine runs an annual All-Stars competition to assess the best cars of the year in various categories. This year, the awesome little Mazda hatch was a finalist. It was so good in 2020 Mazda3 Premium guise that it ended up winning the small car category to become Automobile All-Stars winner.

Considering it was driven alongside Ferrari, Lanborghini, Corvettes and a range of premium cars, the little Mazda held its own means it did exceptionally well to hold its own.

Automobile All-Stars is one of many such competitions held annually by various outlets. It is one of the longer running competitions and has quite a bit of influence in the industry. So it’s good to see them recognize the Mazda3.

They said:

"What the Mazda3 has working against itself in this star-studded crowd—economy and potential anonymity—it makes up for with honest-to-goodness excellence," said contributor Basem Wasef.

"Feels like a big Miata hatchback," observed features editor Rory Jurnecka. "Good manual gear throws, well controlled body motions, and tight handling. The fact you can buy this much quality, fun, and practicality for less than the average cost of a new car in the U.S. today is a big win."

2020 Mazda3 Premium Package

The restyled 2020 Mazda3 is a triumph of design. It’s a small car that doesn’t feel or drive like one. A compact with enough space for adults in all four seats and decent trunk space too.

The design is a triumph. It’s sporty and looks fast even when standing still, even though going fast is not its intent. The car starts low at the front and gradually rises on two planes. The first, the curved hood over a raked windshield, curved roof and round into the hatch. The second, the rising beltline with panel detail that flows into a rear quarterlight and round into the hatch.

It is a lovely design that makes the car look superb.

Inside, the cabin is minimalist in a good way. All controls have been well considered and the cabin features high quality materials, great design, more interior space than you might think too. Even the large screen over the centre stack seems perfectly in place.

That streamlined hood hides a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine that generates 186 hp. It’s a small, frugal engine that packs quite the punch. The car is small, light and perfectly balanced which means you don’t need big power to have a great time in this car.

With AWD as an option, the 2020 Mazda3 is a solid car for Canadian owners. It is nippy in town, can be parked almost anywhere and holds its own on the highway. All while providing a fun drive.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who rates the Mazda3. It’s good to have other journalists have their say and come to similar conclusion. Especially those not affiliated with a Mazda dealership!
