The CX-9 is one of those vehicles that never makes a fuss. It doesn’t shout ‘look at me’ or try to make the headlines. It is one of those vehicles content to go about its business transporting people around the world with the minimum of fuss and maximum amount of comfort. The new 2020 Mazda CX-9 looks to build on that.
The 2020 Mazda CX-9 sees a modest update for the model year. The three row crossover market is a tough one but Mazda already knows it has a winner, so has kept the changes modest. That can often be more effective than huge changes and this is one of those times I think.
First up is a slight bump in power. The 2.5-litre four cylinder turbo gets an extra 10 lb-ft of torque up to 320 lb-ft. The 250 hp output remains the same. The CX-9 keeps the six speed automatic transmission and front drive or AWD.
Let’s off road
Next is the new off-road traction assist feature. While not designed for off roading, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 has some capability in the rough and this system is designed to capitalize on that. Mazda describes it thus: “When the diagonal wheels lose traction, off-road traction assist will stop reducing the engine torque and increases the brake force on the wheels without traction. This transfers power to the wheels still on the ground to help allow the vehicle to regain traction and continue the drive.”
There is also a slight bump in standard features across trims. The Sport trim gets heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated outside mirrors and auto high beam headlights. All of the i-Activsense safety features are now standard too.
Touring and Grand Touring trims now have the option for Captain’s chairs in the second row. These are new and offer a real upgrade for passengers who want a little more personal space on a road trip. The Touring trim also has the option for a new 9 inch touchscreen.
The current Mazda CX-9 is an excellent SUV that can seat a family and carry cargo with ease. It has the signature Mazda looks, competence on the road and smooth engines while also offering good ground clearance, excellent visibility and the usual high quality interior that Mazda is known for.
i-Activsense is the real deal and offers a full-color heads-up display, forward collision mitigation, rear collision warning, and blind spot monitor with warning sensors. It all works well to keep you safe while on the road without coddling you so much that you feel invincible. I think this is the ideal balance to be struck between making us safer on the road and making us complacent.
With a wide range of features and optional extras across the trims, the Mazda CX-9 is definitely worth checking out. Visit Mazda of Hamilton, 1977 Upper James Street Hamilton, ON L9B 1K8 to see it up close.
