2020 Mazda CX-30 at the Montreal Auto Show

2020 Mazda CX-30 at the Montreal Auto Show

As well as the new Kia Seltos, another new car that caught our eye at the Montreal Auto Show was the new 2020 Mazda CX-30. It’s another crossover in a market full of them but, like most Mazda vehicles, manages to effortlessly stand out from the crowd.

Also like the Seltos, we first got to see the 2020 Mazda CX-30 at LA last year. We didn’t get too much time to admire it given how many others wanted to look so it was nice to spend a little more time admiring its lines this time round.

2020 Mazda CX-30

Despite sitting between a CX-3 and a CX-5, this is a CX-30 and not a CX-4. I wasn’t the only one to remark on this but Mazda said the CX-4 is already in use in other markets, so mystery solved.

Back to the car, the design is typically Mazda with flowing lines, great balance, a very nice front end with Mazda grille and angled lighting, a rising beltline and rolling roof. It has decent ground clearance, large wheel arches that almost swallow the wheels and tires but somehow manages so seem perfectly done.

It’s a compact crossover but it doesn’t feel small inside. The cabin is light, well put-together and full of technology. Seating is comfortable in front and rear and you could fit two adults in back without too much compromise while still having space in the hatch for groceries. Up front, the driving position is comfortable and commanding and delivers everything you could want from a crossover.

CX-30 mechanicals

Under the hood is either a 2.0-litre four cylinder that makes 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque or a 2.5-litre engine that makes 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. Both use a 6 speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front or all wheels.

As  you would expect from Mazda, the drive is superb with a well balanced chassis, superb suspension setup and direct driving feel. Even on a daily commute, you can either cruise while daydreaming or accept all the feedback the steering wheel offers and the car won’t mind a bit.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 can be specced with Mazda’s i-Activsense safety suite. That includes driver attention alert, radar cruise control, stop and go, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, smart brake support and high beam control. You will also have the option for blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive headlights.

The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is a fun little car that is a great drive. It sits way above the usual crossovers and offers an attractive package in all meanings of the word. Visit Mazda of Hamilton, 1977 Upper James Street Hamilton, ON L9B 1K8 to learn more.
