2020 Kia Seltos

2020 Kia Seltos

640 × 353
We have known for a while that Kia has had plans for more crossovers and that something was nearing production. That something is the 2020 Kia Seltos. Currently being hinted at by Kia, the new small crossover should be unveiled during the summer.

We do know a few things about it though.

The 2020 Kia Seltos will be a compact SUV that will seat five and is apparently destined to slot between the Kia Soul and Sportage in the model lineup. There is quite a gap between those two models so the Seltos has room to grow as it needs to.

We also know that there will be an AWD model, which is great news for us. Despite its diminutive size, there has been a 4WD badge spotted already on test cars and hint pics so we are confident that this will become a reality.

We know that it will be a global model too which is also great news. It means it won’t just be the Asians or Europeans that get to enjoy another Kia crossover and means Canadians and Americans can reap the rewards too. Release dates are unknown right now but with the reveal slated for this summer, it isn’t unreasonable to think production might begin shortly after.

Seltos
The name Seltos is a divergence of a Greek mythological character. Celtos was the son of Herakles and Kia exchanged the C for an S to make it sound cooler and help link it to speed or sportiness. I’m not convinced on the name personally. I’m sure it works better in Korea than North America but that’s a minor complaint. As the Seltos will be aimed at the younger end of the spectrum, they will likely accept it much more readily than I.

The engines and drivetrains have yet to be announced but it isn’t unreasonable to think it will share the mechanicals from the Soul or Rio or perhaps even the Sportage. I would expect to see the 2.0-litre four cylinder make an appearance and perhaps the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine from the Rio or Forte. We shall have to wait and see though as there could be all new drivetrains in production.

It is also likely that an EV or hybrid version of the Seltos may be with us at some point. Kia have said regularly that they are investing heavily in zero emission vehicles and if this is of a size with the Soul, the EV motor could work here too depending on weight.

So we know a little about the 2020 Kia Seltos but the rest is pure speculation. We should find out more in a month or two.

In the meantime, these Kia cars can be driven right away. See the range at Grimsby Kia, 435 South Service Road Grimsby, ON L3M 4E8.
