2020 Kia Niro EV at LA

2020 Kia Niro EV at LA

The long awaited electric version of the new Kia crossover is finally here. Even though we saw it at CES in the summer, it was good to see it again at the LA Auto Show and to see that very little, if anything had changed.

2020 Kia Niro EV
We are now all familiar with the look and feel of the Kia Niro. The standard SUV has been with us for a while and has sold quite well. Both the gas and hybrid Niro have proven that there is an appetite for a cool car with a friendly design and the Niro fits the bill perfectly.

The design is very similar to the existing models. It’s a modest design with rounded front end, angled lights, Kia tiger nose and wide lower grille. In this EV, the tiger nose is filled with a panel and has the charging port in front of the driver. The lighting is LED and some neat headlights look to be able to project well in front of where you’re going.

The rest of the design is identical to the standard Niro except for the absence of an exhaust. Fluted lower sill detailing in the door, a curved roof, curved hood and roof rails add interest while a nice set of alloy wheels completes the look.

On the inside, you get the same good quality materials and finishing. There are some EV only elements within the instrument panel and some of the trim is unique to the EV but is a very nice place to be.

Under the hood
Under the hood of the 2020 Kia Niro EV is an electric motor with a 64kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The batteries are good for up to 239 miles and the motor generates the equivalent of 201 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque. The batteries can charge from 0-80% in 75 minutes using a fast charger or from 0-100% charge in 9.5 hours using a 240v outlet.

The Niro EV uses regenerative braking to help maintain the batteries when in use. It automatically adjusts the amount of energy reclamation according to driving conditions and distance from the vehicle in front. It will be very interesting to see how this works in practice!

The 2020 Kia Niro EV will hit dealerships sometime in Q1 2019. If you want to get ahead of the game, visit Grimsby Kia, 435 South Service Road Grimsby, ON L3M 4E8 to register your interest.
