Of all of the cars showing at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator was one of the most hotly anticipated. Having been extensively leaked for the past few months to whet our appetite, this Jeep had the crowds salivating from the moment of the unveil.
2020 Jeep Gladiator
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator is essentially a Wrangler with a pickup nailed to the back. Yet it manages to look and feel so much more. The front end is all Wrangler with signature grille, fenders, solid front bumper, upright body and high ground clearance. Then, behind the rear passenger door, there’s a truck bed.
It’s a long vehicle, significantly longer than the Wrangler but that means you can carry more stuff anywhere you go. The Gladiator still has the same off road ability as the Wrangler as long as clearance is suitable for longer wheelbase vehicles as it still has the same Dana kit underneath.
Despite being 787mm longer, the Gladiator is only slightly heavier thanks to some new aluminium panels. The truck bed is 1524mm long and rated to carry up to 725kg. The Gladiator is also rated to tow up to 4370kg too.
Inside, the same rugged design that adorns the latest Wrangler is present here. It’s a much better cabin than before, offering more concessions to comfort without giving away any of that wipe clean practicality of before. There is a 7 inch or 8.4 inch touchscreen, smartphone compatibility, USB charging and more inside too.
Under the hood
Under the hood of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator is the ever-reliable Pentastar V6. The 3.6-litre engine produces 265 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and offers AWD through an automatic transmission. The 3.0-litre diesel is still being promised for next year so no further details are available on that.
There are two different all-wheel drive systems available that offer full-time torque management. There are also electric front and rear axle locks, limited slip differential and electronic sway-bar disconnect. The Gladiator will run on 17 inch wheels with 33 inch off road tires giving it up to 11 inches of ground clearance.
Jeep said they designed the Gladiator after overwhelming requests from customers. As it will be released within the next few months, we will quickly be able to see if that bears out or not. With an expect release date of Q2 2019, there’s a little time to wait as yet.
