Kia has 11 cars rated Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus

640 × 480
Kia has more cars in the top two safety categories than any other automaker. The Korean manufacturer has 11 models that have been rated Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus by the US IIHS.

Safety is more of a key requirement in cars now than at any time before. Whether that’s down to more dangerous roads or our awareness of danger on the roads has yet to be seen but either way, the safer the car we drive, the safer we feel. That should also translate into our overall safety on the road.

Top Safety Pick
Kia cars rated as a Top Safety Pick include some of the automaker’s most popular models.
  • 2019 Kia Forte
  • 2019 Kia Niro hybrid
  • 2019 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid
  • 2019 Kia Optima
  • 2019 Kia Stinger
  • 2019 Kia Sorento
  • 2020 Kia Soul
Top Safety Pick Plus
Models rated as Top Safety Pick Plus are regarded as the safest cars currently available on the market. Kia has four cars with this designation.
  • 2019 Kia Rio sedan
  • 2019 Kia Rio hatchback
  • 2019 Kia Cadenza
  • 2020 Kia Telluride
Some of these models require specific headlights or optional safety equipment to be rated as Top Safety Pick Plus.

Safety ratings explained
The IIHS is a US organisation charged with assessing the safety of modern road vehicles and rating them accordingly. To achieve these ratings, vehicles are put through a battery of tests and are scored on how they perform. This year became even more difficult as the tests were enhanced to make them tougher to pass.

Last year, a vehicle only needed to be graded as ‘Acceptable’ in testing to be regarded as a Top Safety Pick. Now vehicles have to be graded as ‘Good’ to achieve that.

A vehicle must be rated as ‘Good’ in a number of tests to be rated as Top Safety Pick. Vehicles must achieve ‘Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ in the passenger-side small overlap front test, ‘Advanced’ or ‘Superior’ rating in front crash prevention and ‘Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ for the new headlight test.

To achieve Top Safety Pick Plus, a vehicle must achieve a ‘Good’ rating for moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, an ‘Advanced’ or ‘Superior’ rating for the front crash prevention test and ‘Good’ for headlights.

Other manufacturers have vehicles that score either Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus but none have as many as Kia. Just one more reason to buy one!
