What do you do if you want to update a vehicle in a typically very conservative market? How do you attract new buyers and those who want the latest technology while maintaining the loyalty of traditionalists who like what they like? Ram seems to have an idea. You offer the old truck alongside the new and call it the Classic.

I always say that updating flagship vehicles is the toughest job in the automotive industry. Balancing those conflicting requirements, to attract new buyers without alienating existing ones. To deliver cutting-edge design and technology without sending existing owners off to the competition. The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic seems to answer that brief.

‘As we launch the all-new 2019 Ram 1500, we didn’t want to walk away from a key part of the light-duty truck market,’ said Ram boss Mike Manley in a recent statement.

It makes sense too. Production is still in full swing and delays in the supply chain for the new truck have caused bottlenecks. Keeping this new/old model going keeps demand satisfied while also giving traditionalists something to look forward to.

Call it a classic
Buyers of the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic won’t get the new developments but they will retain the look and feel of the older model. You won’t get the lighter chassis and body, the new transmission or the new hybrid system. You won’t even get the new and improved air suspension system either. You will essentially get a new old Ram 1500 with a new badge.

Ram will offer the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic in Tradesman, Express, Big Horn, Lone Star and SSV (Special Services Vehicle) trims. It will be available with two or four-wheel drive and will come in Regular, Quad and Crew Cab configurations. As far as we can tell, there will be three different bed lengths too.

Engine options include the ever-reliable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 and the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 at a later time.

I think the 2019 Ram 1500 Classic makes perfect sense. It offers buyers the best of both worlds and keeps an already popular truck coming while attracting new owners with a newer truck. We expect to see the Classic later this year. I’ll let you know when we have specifics.
