Details on the new 2019 MX-5 Miata RF have been released by Mazda and it looks good! As one of the best selling and best performing roadsters in the world, a lot was at stake when designing an update. Fortunately, it looks like the company got it just right.

The 2019 MX-5 Miata RF is modest with its changes but they all look like good ones. The most important is a power upgrade for the engine. It’s the same 2.0-litre four cylinder as current vehicles have but it has been tweaked and improved to deliver 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. That’s an increase of 26 hp and 3 lb-ft.

The new engine features lighter pistons and rods and a larger throttle in order to up the power. It will be paired with a six speed manual or automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Other minor updates include a standard rear-view camera and optional Traffic Sign Recognition and Smart City Brake Support. This is an excellent update even if a car this small already has good rear visibility. A lighter steering column is also being added for weight saving.

Grand Touring
The 2019 MX-5 Miata RF comes as a Club or Grand Touring in either manual or automatic. The Club comes with limited-slip differential and strut brace, heated seats, satellite radio, blind-spot monitoring and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.

The Grand Touring adds automatic headlights, 17-inch dark silver wheels, an auto-dimming mirror,  automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and heated leather seats, Mazda Navigation, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, new Traffic Sign Recognition, adaptive front lighting system, high beam control, lane-departure warning and Smart City Brake Support. There are also extra packages and features optional on all trims.

The design of the 2019 MX-5 Miata RF is superb. Like other Mazda vehicles, the design is low at the front and while other models work its way up as you go along, the MX-5 keeps thing low. There is a slight ramp at the back but otherwise this is a low slung roadster.

We fully expect the superb handling characteristics of the current vehicle to remain here. As nothing major has changed in terms of the engine or chassis and the Brembo brake upgrade is still an option, we think this car will be as fun to drive as it has always been. With deliveries due this month, we don’t have long to wait until we find out!
