2019 Mazda3 spied

640 × 427
Mazda are supposed to be showing their new 2019 Mazda3 at the LA Auto Show this month but that hasn’t stopped eagle-eyed fans from spotting it being tested out in the wild. Spy shows of the mini Mazda tell us quite a lot about the car and about what to expect in LA.

A series of Mazda3 images shown over at Autoexpress in the UK gives us a good idea of what to expect. It seems the new design holds no small resemblance to the Mazda Kai concept we saw last year at the Tokyo Motor Show. That’s great news for anyone who saw that car and thought yes please!

The Kai concept went down very well indeed. The shape, the idea and the mere presence of the car drew quite a crowd when it was shown. The spy shows look like the 2019 Mazda3 has gown a little since the last model and has changed shape more at the rear than at the front.

From the spy shots, we can see that the front looks to feature the signature Mazda grille and curved hood along with distinct fenders. A smooth contour down the length of the car may hide flourishes on the panels but doesn’t look like it even under camo. At the back is where the real changes look to have happened. A different shape pillar, flatter design, more rounded rear arches and back end and more integrated lights look to be coming in this new model.

This is the fourth generation Mazda3 and will look to take the brand further forward. Designed to take on the Ford Focus and Honda Civic, the Mazda needs to be good to compete. While traditional cars may be heading the way of the dodo, I think there are a few generations left before we’re all driving trucks or crossovers. I think at least some of us will be driving the Mazda3 at least once.

We don’t yet know what will be under the hood but we do expect it to feature Mazda's new SkyActiv-X engine. This engine is supposed to offer good levels of power with exceptional gas mileage and use the automaker’s Spark-Controlled Combustion Ignition technology. This utilizes variable compression to maximize the output of the smallest amount of gas and air to create the most efficient combustion. It’s a neat idea and will do well if it works.

The entire 2019 Mazda3 package looks to be a compelling one. The design, the composure, the frugality and technology may all combine to make this a must-buy for 2019. As LA is only a couple of weeks away, we don’t have long to wait to find out!

If you don’t want to wait for a future model, the 2018 Mazda3 is available at Mazda of Hamilton, 1977 Upper James Street Hamilton, ON L9B 1K8.
