I am trying to spend a little time with each car in the Mazda range whenever I get the opportunity. It isn’t as often as I would like so I really appreciate it when I do. This week I got to spend a little time with a 2019 Mazda3.
This is a compact car with a big personality. It’s a small car but doesn’t feel it and when you’re on the road you don’t feel small at all, in a good way. There is little buffeting, sound insulation is good, engines are peppy and there are enough gears for every situation. I like it!
2019 Mazda3 design
The styling is top class. Futuristic but also realistic. The hatchback version is a back-heavy design, with a long curved hood, low front end and a steeply raked windshield that flows around a very rounded rear end. The sedan is more conventional but still has the same attractive lines but a more proportional look.
Both shapes have the attractive low Mazda grille, lights and curved hood which make this car really stand out.
Inside, there is very little to choose between the two models. The cabin is well put-together with good visibility and light levels, comfortable seating and a driver-centric dashboard. Materials and finishing are of a high quality and the entire interior feels upscale.
2019 Mazda3 engine and mechanicals
All versions of the 2019 Mazda3 use the same engine. A 2.5-litre four cylinder that produces 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. All come with either a six speed manual or automatic transmission to drive the front wheels. The engine revs high but never feels out of control and offers a more exciting driving experience than you might think.
The quality of ride and comfort you expect from Mazda are all there. Composed suspension, good brakes, a balanced chassis and excellent road holding are just the beginning.
2019 Mazda3 summary
The 2019 Mazda3 comes with a lot of safety tech that makes it a good buy. It hasn’t yet been rated but all but the base models come with driver attention alert system with eye monitoring, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alert, active lane control and adaptive cruise control. Adaptive front lighting and a head-up display are paid options.
The car is lively and easy to handle, small and light yet feels solid. It’s an excellent car for the city and highway and offers excellent value given the quality and technology on offer.
