2019 Ford Edge ST: A Quick Overview

2019 Ford Edge ST: A Quick Overview

600 × 411

This week is a big week for reveals. With the 2018 North American International Auto Show at Detroit in full swing, new vehicles are coming thick and fast. One that really caught my eye was the 2019 Ford Edge ST. A sportier version of one of many crossover SUVs Ford has in its product range.

The 2019 Ford Edge ST takes the already good Ford Edge and turns it up to 11. The ST moniker is what Ford gives its performance tuned vehicles that aren’t quite lunatic enough to earn the RS badge. It is a middle ground that offers better looks and performance while keeping things fairly sensible and easy to live with.

2019 Ford Edge ST

The 2019 Ford Edge ST looks amazing. Designers have added some sporty elements to the exterior that make a huge difference. A slightly wider front grille, a modified lower sill, more pronounced panel detailing down the side, twin exhausts and larger alloy wheels. While Ford hasn’t gone overboard with the tweaks, the Edge is all the better for it.

On the inside, we expect the interior to be just as interesting although we haven’t seen evidence of it yet. The teaser images we saw didn’t include the real interior so the jury is currently still out on what’s inside.

Here’s a video of it in action:

On the Edge

What makes the 2019 Ford Edge ST properly different is under the hood. In this version there is a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine that produces 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. It is the same engine that appears in a couple of Ford’s Sport models and has been uprated slightly to improve power.

The engine will use a modified eight speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters to send power to all wheels. Presumably the suspension will have been uprated along with the brakes to handle this power. The ‘normal’ Edge drives well and corners nicely so I would hope that this ST version will do the same, only better.

The 2019 Ford Edge ST is quite a departure for Ford. Previously, the ST moniker was only for hot hatches. This is the first non-hatchback to be given the name so it has a lot to live up to. One has to wonder whether we will see a full size SUV model in ST guide anytime soon!
