The Challenger Demon may have gone to the underworld but Dodge still has plenty of power for us to play with. Enter the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. A new car with a new set of performance figures that will make you want one.

The 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye features the 6.2-litre Hemi engine that delivers 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque. It uses an eight speed automatic transmission to send all that power to the rear wheels. It is going to be the most powerful production V8-engined car in the world and is going to sell as fast as it hits 60 mph.

Taking the Redeye
According to a release from Dodge, the 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye may have the same engine as the Demon but it has been significantly upgraded. It includes a larger supercharger, higher boost pressure, strengthened connecting rods, pistons and valve train, high-capacity fuel injection system, second fuel pump, improved lubrication and a higher redline figure of 6,500 rpm.

There will also be a ‘standard’ 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat that will use the same engine dialled back to 717 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. It will use a six speed manual transmission as standard but will have the option to use the eight speed automatic.

Both models will use that new snorkel hood we previewed a few weeks ago. It includes increased airflow to keep things cool and to pump more air into that hungry supercharger.

The only tangible difference between the two models will be a small Redeye badge on the fender and on the supercharger.

Old and new
The 2019 Dodge Challenger looks good in any guise but that new hood certainly looks the part. It’s only when you hear them start that you’ll really know what’s underneath.

The design is classic gold but is still completely relevant for the modern buyer. I particularly like the absence of chrome on these new models. I have a pathological dislike for chrome, almost as much as for fake wood trim. It doesn’t look good, needs to be clean to be presentable and any vehicle trim always looks better in black, or even body colour.

Dodge likes to keep the changes subtle and does the same here. They are enough to satisfy newer buyers and existing fans while also fending off the competition. With these new models due soon, the Challenger remains king of muscle cars, well, maybe tied along with the new Ford Mustang. In my opinion anyway.
