2018 Ram 3500 gets more torque

640 × 480
The 2018 Ram 3500 doesn’t get much press despite being one of the most popular heavy pickups around. It is one of those vehicles that just gets on with its job, bought and loved by those who need to tow or haul big loads. Today that changes as an announcement by Ram means good news for those waiting for the 2018 Ram 3500.

The 2018 Ram 3500 doesn’t get much press because it is a pure work truck. Where the 1500 is often used as a daily driver for both work and commuting, the 3500 is all about work. Nobody needs a truck of this size unless you tow or haul big loads. If you do either of those, you cannot get much better than the 3500.

That purposeful intent gets even more focused in the 2018 Ram 3500. Ram have said that the new version of the 6.7-litre Cummins diesel engine that is available for the 3500 is going to generate 930 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to pull a 30,000 pound load with a fifth wheel.

2018 Ram 3500
The 2018 Ram 3500 with a specific fifth wheel, dual rear wheels, Aisin 6-speed automatic and 4.10 axle will be able to tow trailers up to 30,000 lbs. That’s 2,500 lbs more than the Ford Super Duty with only 5 lb-ft of torque extra. Add a gooseneck and the tow limit increases to 31,210 lbs.

The 930 lb-ft target is only achievable with this combination of parts. The fifth wheel, dual rear wheels and 4.10 axle have been specifically designed to cope with the weight of the load. The Aisin transmission has also been designed to allow only some of that torque through until you get to third gear to help keep things safe and reliable.

If these stats are true, the 2018 Ram 3500 will have more torque than any truck on the road right now. The Ford Super Duty is rated at 925 lb-ft while the Chevrolet 3500 HD has 910 lb-ft of torque. While the need for such figures is questionable, it is certainly used frequently for bragging rights. With that in mind, don’t expect the race to 1000 to stop anytime soon.

Aside from the torque, the 2018 Ram 3500 looks to be a solid work truck that will be as reliable as ever. Rugged design, reliable engines, excellent build quality and top quality cabins are just some of the reasons to buy one.
