2018 Mazda6 awarded Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS

640 × 480
The US IIHS has awarded the 2018 Mazda6 it’s top award for safety. The new Mazda sedan has been awarded Top Safety Pick+ thanks to performing excellently in a range of safety tests. So not only does it look fantastic and drive sublime, it will keep you safe too!

To be awarded Top Safety Pick+, a car has to perform well in a range of tests that seek to simulate real life situations. According to the IIHS, ‘To qualify for 2018 Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.’

The 2018 Mazda6 equipped with optional adaptive headlights did just that.

2018 Mazda6
The 2018 Mazda6 is one of a few sedans that still sell in numbers. While everyone else is moving to crossovers and SUVs, Mazda is staying the course. That is good for us as the Mazda6 is a superb sedan that proves there is lots of life in the old body style yet.

The design is excellent. The right side of sporty while remaining practical. The low front has the Mazda grille and badge and angled lights as usual. The entire profile flows upwards and over a curved roof down to an equally sloped trunk to the tidy rear end. Simple panel design with very little fuss allows the shape to do the talking.

Inside, the cabin is very well put together. Materials are top quality while finishing and included technology are both top notch. There is enough head and leg room for adult passengers in all seats with space to spare in the trunk. Technology up front is generous too.

Under the hood is either a 2.5-litre four cylinder engine that produces 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. There is also a turbocharged 2.5-litre four cylinder that produces 227 hp and 310 lb-ft with standard gas or 250 hp using premium gas. Both use a 6 speed automatic transmission while the non-turbo has a manual option.

To achieve its Top Safety Pick+ rating, the Mazda6 can be equipped with full-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control and those adaptive headlights.

The Mazda6 is a great car for a great price. With a composed ride, smooth transmission and very capable engine, there are all the ingredients here for a fantastic drive. Visit Mazda of Hamilton, 1977 Upper James Street Hamilton, ON L9B 1K8 to see it up close.
