The newly redesigned 2018 Kia Rio has aced the small overlap test at the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, making it the safest version so far. The attractive little Kia subcompact not only offers amazing value but will also look after you in the event of a collision.

The new model was tested alongside its sibling the Hyundai Accent and both did well in the small overlap crash tests. Previous models didn’t perform so well in this test but according to the IIHS, this new version did much better. So much better than both models were awarded ‘Good’ ratings in the small overlap crash test.

Specifically, the 2018 Kia Rio have was awarded a 'good' rating in the driver side small overlap test. The cars received an 'acceptable' rating in the new passenger side impact due to the dummy's head sliding off the right of the airbag.

Performance in this test isn’t just about size. It is a notoriously difficult test that all automakers have had to work hard to overcome. The test is designed to simulate a partial hit with a stationary object. A situation that happens across Canada every day. It is one of the more real life tests that car buyers should pay attention to.

2018 Kia Rio
The 2018 Kia Rio is all new for this model year. It has been priced very competitively but doesn’t leave you wanting in any area. It is an excellent balance of value, design and performance. Available as both a sedan and hatch, this is a small car with big potential.

The design is typical Kia. A small tiger nose with angled lights and curved hood drawing in at the front. A large lower grille and fog lights offer a touch of character to the façade. With a rising beltline and sloping hood, this looks and feels like a compact from the outside, not from when you’re inside.

There is room for five adults with three in back and some room for cargo too. Technology is decent and can be specified with a range of extra features. A touchscreen offers a premium feel while great finishing throughout adds to the feeling of quality.

There is a single engine option for the 2018 Kia Rio. A four cylinder 1.6-litre that produces 130 hp and 119 lb-ft of torque. A six speed manual delivers power to the front wheels. An automatic transmission is an option.

With three trims, LX, S and EX offering a range of features and options, as well as good levels of safety, there is a lot to like about this diminutive car. Visit Georgetown Kia, 199 and 314 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario to see it for yourself!
