2018 Kia Rio awarded Top Safety Pick+

2018 Kia Rio awarded Top Safety Pick+

640 × 480
The 2018 Kia Rio is a neat little subcompact that delivers on comfort, practicality, quality and price. Hard to do in a market full of great subcompacts. For everyone deliberating over what car to get in this segment, the little Kia now has an ace up its sleeve. The Top Safety Pick+ rating from the US IIHS.

This makes the 2018 Kia Rio the only subcompact right now with such a high rating. Buy a Kia Rio with the optional LED projector headlights and forward collision prevention system and you get what is regarded as the safest subcompact on the road. According to the IIHS anyway.

This is great news for the Rio as I have always liked the diminutive little car. It’s good looking and nippy round town. Two things I look for in a city car.

2018 Kia Rio
The 2018 Kia Rio is an all new car. It replaces the previous version with a new look, new engines, new infotainment and a lot more. The previous model was a solid option for those who like smaller cars but this new model improves on it in a number of ways.

The design is more upright at the front than the outgoing model. A taller front end brings it more into line with Kia sedans while the tiger nose is still front and centre. Angled lights, a large lower valance, air ducts for the brakes and hood detailing offer a little flourish alongside the modest waistline that runs the length of the car.

Inside, the cabin is more spacious than it looks. All four seats can fit adults in comfort while storage is generous and sometimes ingenious. Materials quality and finishing has improved along with the infotainment option. Front seats are comfortable and adjustable and visibility is good all round. What has improved drastically is road noise. The cabin is now quieter than ever thanks to different materials and build techniques. Road noise intrudes much less even at highway speeds. That’s a big benefit given that this is a budget car.

Under the hood is a 1.6-litre four cylinder that produces 130 hp and 119 lb-ft of torque. It sends power to the front wheels via a six speed manual or automatic transmission. A new configuration means more low down power with this new engine making it ideal for city driving. It is great at stop start driving yet equally at home on the highway.

Safety is taken care of too, as you would expect from a car rated Top Safety Pick+!
