2018 Kia Niro EV spotted

640 × 366
We have known that an electric version of the new Kia was on its way but we didn’t know when or what it would look like. It has now been spotted out in the wild in Germany. The 2018 Kia Niro EV is now a real thing and we have an idea of what it looks like.

The image above, from Car Magazine shows a familiar Niro shape but the camouflage stops us seeing any real details. The profile outline seems a little more upright than the current model but there is obvious padding on the hood of this image so we will assume nothing right now.

What we do know is that the 2018 Kia Niro EV and Hyundai Kona EV are being tested side by side and share the same drivetrain. We think it is a 28kWh lithium-ion battery pack connected to an as yet unknown electric motor. Rumours have the range at 174 miles but other rumours suggest an upgradeable battery pack that extends that to 300 miles.

That is literally all we know right now. If the 300 mile range is even close to being accurate, this will slingshot the 2018 Kia Niro EV to the top of the must-buy list for anyone wanting a practical EV. We will have to wait until the Geneva Motor Show to learn more though.

2018 Kia Niro
The 2018 Kia Niro is available only with a hybrid powertrain. It is a midsize hatchback and is a brand new model for this year. The design is typical Kia. Modern, sleek yet uncontroversial. It will likely appeal to most buyers in the market for an EV.

The Niro uses a 1.6-litre four cylinder engine combined with an electric motor to produce 139 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. It uses a six speed dual clutch automatic transmission to send power to the front wheels. The transmission is smooth, acceleration excellent for this size and the car is currently rated at 52/49 mpg for the Niro FE.

The 2018 Kia Niro comes complete with HID headlights, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With different driving modes and lots of options, there is a lot of freedom to specify your Niro to how you want.

I haven’t had time in one yet but reviews have praised the handling, acceleration and gear changes on the Niro. Others have like the overall look and feel and high quality finishing in the car. I am going to have to wait before I can form my own opinion.
