2018 Ford Flex: A Quick Overview
2018 Ford Flex: A Quick Overview
Posted on October 6, 2017
Many Ford models get a lot of headlines but the Ford Flex seems to fall between the cracks. In what is a very accomplished SUV, I think this one of the most flexible and user friendly SUVs on our roads and more people should drive one.
The 2018 Ford Flex is a seven seat SUV with more than a little Range Rover in its DNA. It looks thoroughly modern and has few of the compromises more crossover-oriented SUVs seem to have. It is also fully featured and comes with capable engines, smooth drivetrain and very accomplished running gear.
2018 Ford Flex design
The 2018 Ford Flex design is polarizing. It is thoroughly modern yet very squared off. This gives it a very solid appearance with few compromises. I think the lack of panel detailing or fussy angles works in the car’s favour and makes it look much better than some of its competition.
On the inside, the three rows all offer decent levels of comfort and space with space in back for shopping or cargo too. The first and second rows are most suitable for adult passengers while the third row is ideal for the kids. Materials and build quality is top notch throughout and the Flex is feature packed too.
2018 Ford Flex engine and mechanicals
The 2018 Ford Flex uses the accomplished 3.5-litre V6 that has already proven its worth for millions of miles. Delivering 287 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque, it is very capable of hauling this SUV and occupants around town. A turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 is available in the Limited trim that delivers 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Both use a six speed automatic transmission to send power to the front or all wheels.
The chassis and suspension is very well balanced for such a large vehicle. Body roll is kept to a minimum and road holding is smooth and sure. It is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre for such a large wheelbase.
2018 Ford Flex safety and features
The Flex comes with a reversing camera, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warnings and adaptive cruise control. Ford MyKey is also available for those with older children.
Other features depend on the trim but will include alloy wheels, air conditioning, xenon headlights, LED taillights, power-folding mirrors, automatic wipers, navigation, premium audio, automatic parking, heated steering wheel and panoramic sunroof. There are as many optional extras as there reasons to choose them.
The 2018 Ford Flex is a solid, reliable SUV that deserves more attention than it gets.
