The Nissan Armada was one of those SUVs that slipped through the cracks and never got the attention or the awards it deserved. That’s about to change with the 2017 Armada. Nissan have improved it in all the right ways and the entire package is now more attractive and much more capable than before.
North America’s appetite for the SUV is still growing and with improvements like this, there’s good reason why. The 2017 Nissan Armada switches from being based on the Titan truck to using the Infiniti QX80 platform and rides better for it. It also gets a new body on frame, new engine, new cabin and lots of new technology.

The Armada is a full size SUV that doesn’t feel like it once you’re inside. It has the signature Nissan front end with chrome V, framed headlamps and lower sill with chrome runner. It also has the familiar profile of a straight roof with rails, a level beltline and angled quarterlight. High ground clearance, big wheels and large hood and screen complete the look. It’s handsome rather than beautiful and that is fine with me.
Inside, the cabin in quite luxurious. Top class materials and finishing, great design and lots of space are all the headliners. The seating positions in all rows are comfortable, afford enough head and leg room and provides plenty of cubbies and storage. All are easily accessible too.
The Armada uses a new 5.6-litre V8 gasoline engine that generates 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. It uses a seven speed automatic transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels. The system also includes a limited slip differential, low range gears and hill start assist.
Safety features include traction and stability control, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and rearview camera are standard. A blind-spot monitoring system, forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are optional.
The 2017 Nissan Armada is a solid update on an already good SUV. The engine is refined and smooth, the chassis stiff and supportive and the improvements are obvious across the board. The cabin is comfortable, quiet and well-built while there is enough technology to keep you safe and entertained while on the road.
The SUV market is a hotly contested one but I think the 2017 Nissan Armada is going to take the fight right to the incumbents. Visit Collins Nissan, 155 Scott Street, St. Catharines, Ontario, L2N 1H3, to see it for yourself.
