2017 Kia Sportage wins Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS

A couple of weeks ago we were celebrating the fact that the 2016 Kia Optima was awarded Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS. Now we are celebrating with Kia again as the 2016 Kia Sportage joins the party.

The 2017 Kia Sportage has just been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ rating from U.S. IIHS and joins its sibling in being one of the safest cars around. Even more impressive, the Sportage was rated ‘poor’ in previous tests and is now rated as ‘good’ thanks to improvements made in the small overlap test.

Good doesn’t sound all that impressive but it is the IIHS’ highest award. The Sportage did well on the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also improved with that tough new small overlap test, being awarded ‘superior’ which was enough to bag that important Top Safety Pick+ rating.

The 2017 Kia Sportage takes safety seriously. Standard safety tech includes antilock brakes, six airbags, rearview camera, traction control, electronic stability control and hill start assist control. Optional tech includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert.

"The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is one of the most recognized and respected organizations in the industry when it comes to evaluating vehicle safety, and as such, the Top Safety Pick Plus designation is a significant achievement," said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning, KMA.

"We are especially proud to have our all-new Sportage earn that TSP+ rating in light of IIHS' new, more challenging standards, validating the efforts of our engineers and the priority we place on safety." (Source)

2017 Kia Sportage
The 2017 Kia Sportage is a flexible, comfortable and accomplished crossover SUV. It looks great, performs well, has some good engines, lots of technology and everything the modern buyer looks for in a new car.

The design is very modern and brings the Sportage in line with other newer Kia cars. The design is soft and friendly, yet means business. The tiger nose nestles comfortably in a rounded nose with angled lights and hood for company. A sloped roof with rising beltline and fluted panels draw the eye in profile while a simple rounded rear end completes the look.

Inside, the cabin is very spacious and quiet. It feels as though it should be more expensive than it is and is stuffed full of technology. Seating is comfortable both in front and in back, with room enough for adults in each seat and shopping or cargo in back.

Under the hood is one of two engines. A 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder that produces 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque or a 2.4-litre four that produces 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. Both use a six speed automatic transmission.

The 2017 Kia Sportage is now rated as one of the safest in its class. Visit Georgetown Kia, 199 and 314 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario to see it in all its glory.
