We finally got a good look at the 2017 Kia Sportage this week and we liked what we saw. We love the new Optima and Sorento and were eagerly awaiting this new Kia model. Our patience was repaid in full!
The 2017 Kia Sportage is a neat looking crossover SUV. It takes on the now familiar Kia ‘face’ with angled headlights and tiger nose grille. The grille has been with us for years, but the new lighting design going across models is something more recent and doesn’t look too bad at all. It gives a certain friendliness to the visage and I think I like it.
The design is modern and stylish. The front end looks great and the profile continues that will a very modern feel. The sharply rising beltline and curved roof look very sleek while the rooftip spoiler at the rear hatch looks just right. The rear ends is tidy and intersected by some tidy looking rear lights. High ground clearance and polished alloy wheels complete the look.
Inside, the controls are canted slightly towards the driver, with a decent centre stack and a bunch of controls all taken from the Optima. Improvements in soft touch materials, layout and design add a much more premium feel to the surroundings. Road noise is minimal and there is enough space in the rear for taller adults too. All while leaving room in back for some cargo.
2017 Kia Sportage engines
There are two four cylinder engine options for the 2017 Kia Sportage. A 2.4-litre that produces 181 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque and a turbo 2.4 that produces 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both use a six speed transmission to send power to the rear wheels. AWD is an option.
New suspension, steering components and steering rack make for a very responsive ride. The old Sportage rode quite well but this new version is agile and planted at the same time. It is also quiet on the road, which is a bonus.
The 2017 Kia Sportage has not completed all U.S. safety tests but has so far been awarded Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. It scored good on all tests, including the notorious small-overlap front crash test. With the optional front-crash avoidance system, that rating increases to ‘Superior’.
The 2017 Kia Sportage has made all the right changes in all the right places. It is more comfortable, quieter, nicer to drive, feature-rich and still competitively priced. All things Kia has become synonymous with offering. It is exactly what we wanted to see in the model successor and we haven’t been disappointed.
