I have mentioned the coming of the 2017 Kia Soul Turbo before with almost baited breath. While the Soul is Kia’s best seller, the Korean automaker wasn’t satisfied with appealing to the masses, they wanted some niche appeal too, hence this turbo version. It isn’t a hot hatch and isn’t designed to be a performance car but instead is designed to sit somewhere in the middle of crossover and hot hatch. In that I think it works.

The standard Soul body shape, chassis and interior remain largely unchanged. What is different is the engine. While still a modest 1.6 litre four cylinder, it has a turbocharger bolted to it to increase power to 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Considering this car weighs next to nothing, the power to weight ratio on the Soul Turbo is pretty good.

The engine is already serving faithfully in the Kia Optima and has proven itself reliable. In the Soul, it is paired with a seven speed dual clutch transmission that sends power to the front wheels. There are apparently plans to make the Soul Turbo an all-wheel drive in the future but for now, it remains FWD only.

The rest of the 2017 Kia Soul Turbo remains much the same. Aside from larger front brake rotors, all the ingredients that have made the standard Soul so popular have been kept in this version. The engine pulls well with great midrange torque and a long power curve. The chassis is strong and stiff enough to provide a planted ride while being comfortable at the same time.

In the cabin, the size and shape of the Kia Soul really pays off. There is a lot of interior space and lots of light. Visibility is great too, from the drivers’ seat and passengers seats. The build quality is first rate, just what we expect from a modern Kia. Materials are top quality, passenger room is generous and the levels of technology are the same.

Adding a turbo to the Kia Soul has helped and hindered buyers. The standard Soul already has quite the following and both the 1.6 and the 2.0-litre versions that are currently available are both very good. The turbocharged version is more of the same but with a little more power. It also gets better gas mileage which is another reason to consider it.

The 2017 Kia Soul Turbo is an excellent option for those who like a bit of get up and go but aren’t into muscle cars or hot hatches. It is the perfect middle ground between sense and sporty and I think it is going to sell tremendously well!
