2017 Kia Niro

2017 Kia Niro

The first of two pieces of Kia news this week is the introduction of the 2017 Kia Niro. It is one of three hybrid vehicles unveiled by the Korean automaker at Chicago but as it’s an all-new model, we think it deserves a piece all of its own. We’ll cover the others later this week.
The 2017 Kia Niro isn’t just a new model, it is the introduction of an entirely new eco platform for the manufacturer. It showed at the 2016 Canadian International Auto Show a few minutes after its Chicago unveiling. We saw a glimpse of the Niro at Frankfurt in 2013 in concept guise and liked what we saw. It had scissor doors and a one piece front bench-type seat. We’re glad to see they didn’t make it to production though!
2017 Kia Niro design
The Niro is definitely a Kia, but looks slightly different than the rest of the stable. The tiger nose is still present but the rest is new. It has a rounder, less sleek shape that suits the crossover intent nicely. The front lights are smaller and less angled than the rest of the range while the side panels are simpler.
Inside, the 2017 Kia Niro is more conventional. A nicely designed interior has a real touch of class about it. Comfortable seating, nice driver’s layout, good visibility with its higher driving position and decent head and leg room for all passengers.
The powertrain
The big news is of course the powertrain. The 2017 Kia Niro is Kia’s first hybrid only vehicle so has some things to prove. The base is the Kia Kappa 1.6-litre four cylinder that produces 103 hp. It is connected to a hybrid motor that boosts output to 146 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The motor is powered by a 1.56-kWh Lithium Ion Polymer battery. Drive is send to the front wheels through a dual clutch automatic transmission.
The system will come with Kia’s Eco-Driver Assistance System, which includes Predictive Energy Control and Coasting Guide. These technologies aim to help improve gas mileage. Predictive Energy Control teaches you to brake safely and in the most efficient way possible. The Coasting Guide uses navigation to help predict the road ahead so you can throttle and brake in advance to save fuel.
"The Niro hits the sweet spot by offering the best combination of outstanding mpg, an engaging driving experience, utility, and most importantly, a stunning design that doesn't shout 'hybrid,'" said Orth Hedrick, vice president product planning Kia Motors America.
"The subcompact CUV market continues to be one of the fastest-growing segments in the world, and the Niro offers a uniquely alluring yet practical package that consumers haven't seen before."
The full specifications of the 2017 Kia Niro have yet to be announced but we expect plenty of gas mileage, a light weight and for it to hit dealerships at the end of this year.
