More details of the 2017 Kia Forte have been announced and the refresh looks to be mainly under the skin. I like the design of the Forte so am quite pleased that the Kia design team haven’t messed with it too much. Most of the changes are underneath with a new engine, new front bumper, slightly modified headlights, some LED lighting and a few mechanical changes.
In the case of the 2017 Kia Forte, less is more. Gone are the detailed front panels and in is a simple bumper and front. A new tiger nose is also evident. The headlights are new, while vents at each side offer a subtle but effective way to bring the fog lights inboard a little and keep the valance looking smooth. The long flowing lines from front to rear remain, which is one of the best elements of the Forte.
Inside, the now typical modern Kia interior offers comfort, space and lots of technology should you require it. Otherwise, it offers supportive seating, good quality materials, nice finishing and a smooth and quiet ride. The journey Kia has been on over the past decade or so is evident in every model but for some reason, a little more so in the Forte.
Under the hood is a new 2.0-litre engine that produces 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a six speed automatic transmission. The EX trim has a 2.0-litre engine but with direct injection, increasing power to 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. There is also thought to be a 1.6-litre turbocharged four cylinder on offer for the 2017 model but Kia have yet to announce any details about it.
Also new in the 2017 Kia Forte is the S trim. It sits between the LX and EX and offers a slightly sporty edg. It adds sports tuned suspension, new 16 inch wheels, LED lighting, rooftip spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, leather steering wheel and shifter and unique interior trim.
On the EX model, some extra features now become standard such as heated seats, leather upholstery, keyless entry, climate control, push button start and LED lighting.
Safety is increased too with the addition of blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts as options on all models. Forward-collision warning, automated braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning and other safety technologies will be available as options.
The updated 2017 Kia Forte looks just as good, if not a little better than the current model. The new engine should be pretty good too. If that turbocharged engine is as good in the Forte as it is in other Kia models, it could definitely be the one to watch. Pricing and availability has yet to be announced, but expect the Kia to be as competitively priced as ever.
