The 2017 Ford Super Duty is a big seller for Ford. That makes this new version a very important vehicle in terms of popularity and earning potential for the company. While truck design tends to be slower than car updates, they are arguably more important as they can have a far bigger impact on the perception and therefore, sales of said truck.
A lot of the 2017 Ford Super Duty is all new. It has a new chassis, new diesel engine, new aluminium body and a new interior. While it certainly still looks like existing Super Duty trucks, it’s a different beast under the skin. In fact, the skin is new too!
That chassis is a boxed frame made of 95% high strength steel, increased so the 2017 Ford Super Duty can haul up to 32,500 pounds, carry up to 7,630 pounds and has a fifth-wheel maximum of 27,500 pounds.
The new diesel engine has some good numbers too. It’s a 6.7-litre diesel V8 that delivers 440 hp and 925 lb-ft of torque. There is also a 6.2-litre gasoline V8 that delivers 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque and a 6.8-litre V10 for the F-450 and F-550. There is also an upgraded transmission in a six speed TorqShift-G automatic for the gas engine. The diesel uses the existing transmission.
The new aluminium body isn’t generating the kind of publicity it did when first introduced on the F-150. It has now proven itself reliable and strong enough to cope with daily work. It has also proven that it isn’t as expensive to repair as first thought and dealerships and repair shops are now up to speed in how to deal with the new body panels.
The introduction of adaptive steering, better sound insulation and higher quality build means the 2017 Ford Super Duty is actually very nice to drive. The new chassis adds significant increases in stiffness while the engines and transmissions work in harmony together. It is a calm, relaxed drive whether you’re hauling or running empty.
New technology such as adaptive cruise control makes highway driving a breeze and the new camera setup ensures manoeuvring is now easier than ever. There is even a mountable camera for a trailer that makes moving it around something anyone can do.
The 2017 Ford Super Duty seems to have made improvements in all the right places. The design is still all-business, the chassis adds more stiffness and capability and those engines are about as capable as any in a truck.
Improvements in handling, the ride, noise reduction, comfort and general driving makes it easy to live with too. All in all, it’s a proper driver’s truck.
