I got to spend some time in a 2017 Ford Edge this week. The Ford crossover SUV is a car I initially wasn’t that fussed about. It doesn’t have a high profile, isn’t as interesting to me as a Raptor or Mustang and didn’t look as spacious or as capable as the Explorer. I was wrong about it not being interesting!
The 2017 Ford Edge is a three row crossover that takes the growing crossover market by storm. It looks good, is very quiet and comfortable and is a surprisingly good drive. The version I tried was the 3.5-litre Titanium. While it is top of the trim range, the standard SE looks and feels pretty good too.
2017 Ford Edge design
The design is a good balance between car and SUV. The frond end is bold with lots of chrome but the soft edges add a relaxed feel to the design that makes it look more mature. The big grille and angled lights are certainly a statement, as it the detailing on every body panel. Yet this adds to the simplicity of the design, not complicating it at all.
On the inside, the two-tone cabin works very well indeed. Materials are top drawer while the layout places everything where it should be. The driving position is very comfortable. The solid-feeling controls are all where they work best, the armrest just the right position and the steering wheel and shifter are just right. Bright instruments and centre stack makes sure you are always in control.
2017 Ford Edge mechanicals
The 2017 Ford Edge Titanium uses a 3.5-litre V6 and a six speed automatic transmission. The engine delivers 280 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque very smoothly indeed. While it never felt as though I had almost 300 hp on tap, there was always power available when I needed it. It is a quite engine too, which I appreciated.
Other trims get a turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder that is capable of 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque or a 2.7-litre turbo V6 in the Sport that delivers 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. All use the same transmission and come as front or all-wheel drive.
The 2017 Ford Edge Titanium comes with leather interior, heated front seats, premium audio, an 8 inch touchscreen with Sync 3, 19 inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, ambient interior lighting, power liftgate, memory seats, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition and climate control. As you would imagine, there are hundreds of options to choose from too.
I would not normally have given the 2017 Ford Edge much of a glance if I were shopping for a new car. That has now changed as it surprised me in all the right ways. Visit Northway Ford Lincoln, 388 King George Road Brantford ON N3S 3N2 and see if it could surprise you too.
