2017 Dodge Challenger earns five star safety rating from NHTSA

640 × 480
The awesome 2017 Dodge Challenger has been awarded five stars by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The new Dodge which should be with us in a couple weeks not only looks and sounds amazing, but is now pretty safe too. Even more reason to buy one!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the new Challenger four stars in the front crash test, five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test. That is pretty good going and allows the Challenger to go head to head with the Mustang in one more arena.

Even though the 2017 Dodge Challenger is all about old school muscle, it does have an eye on safety. Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes, electronic stability control, traction control and 7 airbags. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control are optional too. It is proof, if you needed any, that the Challenger is a much more than just a V8 in a box.

2017 Dodge Challenger
The 2017 Dodge Challenger is more about evolution than revolution with small changes across the board to bring the car forward. Small design, engine and tuning changes improve what is an already impressive car.

The existing model mix continues with SXT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat trims being available. The profile of each varies slightly but all build upon this design that effortlessly combines heritage and modern design without being too much of one thing. While specific design cues such as hood bulge, front splitter, trunk spoiler and all that good stuff varies by model.

Engines include a 3.6-litre V6 that generates 305 hp and a 5.7-litre V8 that’s good for 375 hp. The 6.4-litre HEMI in the SRT generates an impressive 485 hp while the awesome 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI in the Hellcat delivers a deafening 707 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. All use an eight speed automatic transmission while the V8s have the option for a six speed manual.

Despite its size, the 2017 Dodge Challenger drives well. Each model feels slightly different but all have good road manners, comfortable suspension and can corner credibly well for a market segment not known for it. Interiors are spacious and one concession to modernity. With either a 7 or 8.4 inch touchscreen with navigation, a TFT screen in the instruments, there is the slightest nod to the needs of modern buyers.

I think the balance is just right. You get all the heritage of the muscle car but with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Each model looks and sounds the part while balancing the new and old. Plus, few cars have ever had quite the same road presence!
