In a very competitive subcompact market, the 2016 Kia Rio sedan
is designed to lead the pack. The Kia Rio has been with us for five years now
and has become a regular feature on our streets. The tidy design, good engines
and small car practicality make the Rio a firm favourite with all sorts of
people from all sorts of places. All aspects of that are improved with the 2016
2016 Kia Rio design
The design of the 2016 Kia Rio continues with Peter
Schreyer's vision of a single brand image. The tiger nose grille, angled
headlights and lower vent give the car what looks like a smile. The body rises
to the waist and flares a little at the rear wheel arch before sliding round to
the trunk at the rear.
It is a simple, but elegant design, one that is definitely
European in nature but sits just as well on our Canadian streets.
Inside, the design philosophy continues with plenty of soft
touch materials, a nice cabin, supportive seating and lots of options. The trim
has been elevated with new piano black trim, the centre stack now looks much
more upmarket, as does the instrument panel.
Engine and transmission
Under the hood of the 2016 Kia Rio is a 1.6-litre four
cylinder engine that produces 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. A six speed
manual transmission is standard, with an automatic as an option on the sedan
and standard on the hatch. The engine revs smoothly and slips through gears
with ease. It is ideal for urban streets or the open road, which is unusual for
a car of this size.
The strength of this engine is its gas mileage. It is a
frugal engine that gives an estimated 27 city/38 highway/31 combined with a
manual and 27 city/37 highway/31 combined with an automatic.
2016 Kia Rio trims
The 2016 Kia Rio has three trim levels, LX, EX and SX. The
LX offers 15 inch wheels, heated side mirrors, multifunction steering wheel,
air conditioning, cloth interior, adjustable driver's seat, CD audio with SiriusXM
and USB input.
The EX adds 15 inch alloy wheels, fog lights, electric
windows and central locking, upgraded upholstery, leather steering wheel, CD
audio with Bluetooth and Active Echo System.
The SX adds 17 inch alloys, power folding side mirrors, power
sunroof, automatic lighting, LED lights, 7 inch touchscreen with Kia UVO, reversing
camera, smart key, paddle shifters, leather trim, heated front seats and aluminium
The 2016 Kia Rio is a subcompact that offers a lot. It's
comfortable, well specified and drives well. With great looks, a good engine
and enough space for the whole family, there's nothing not to like about this
great little car.
