2016 Kia Optima at the New York Auto Show

We featured the new family sedan from Kia a week or so ago as the
Korean automaker leaked the design ahead of the New York Auto Show. Now, with
day one done we have seen the new Optima in the flesh and I must say, I like
it!

We couldn't get near enough to it to see inside the cabin,
but if the inside matches the out, we're in for a real treat. As expected, the 2016
Kia Optima does take some design cues from the Sportspace concept we saw
earlier this year. It also seems to take some from the higher tier K900 luxury
sedan, which is nice.

We now have a long front end with a downward curve on the
hood. The tiger nose is still front and centre but this time there is a curve
to it that softens it a little. Shaped headlights that curve round into the
wings, a low sill with grille and air intakes on the front corners completes
the look at the front.

Going down the side we see a Ford-style chrome detail
between the wheel arch and side mirror, a fluted waistline and a rounded inset
detail above the sill. Nice polished alloy wheels adds the final touch.

Kia did tell us that the 2016 Kia Optima will have three
engine options. The new model will come with either a 2.4-litre four cylinder
that delivers 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-litre that delivers 247 hp
and 260 lb-ft of torque or a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine that will be good
for 178 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque.

All but the turbo will use a six-speed automatic
transmission while the turbo will use the new seven-speed dual clutch
transmission borrowed from Hyundai.

Inside story

While we didn't get to peek into the cabin, there was
material on show to tell us what to expect in the 2016 Kia Optima. The design
is said to be upgraded, simpler and cleaner and a much more driver-oriented
space. It will be full of technology and quieter and more refined than ever.

Technology options are said to include Google Android Auto
integration, Kia UVO2 infotainment and a few more toys that Kia didn't give
away. Other improvements are said to include new leather materials, new stitching,
wider centre stack and better use of space within the cabin.

The 2016 Kia Optima is expected to hit dealerships sometime
in Q4 2015.
