2016 Ford Explorer: A Quick Overview

2016 Ford Explorer: A Quick Overview

The 2016 Ford Explorer receives a number of updates for this model year including trim upgrades, exterior and interior improvements, updated safety features, a new suspension setup, new engine option and the introduction of the Platinum trim.

We love our SUVs. They are large enough for family, cargo, leisure equipment and anything else we need to haul. They drive (mostly) like cars, offer elevated visibility, are safe and very practical while also giving decent gas mileage. All things that are also characteristics of the 2016 Ford Explorer.

2016 Ford Explorer design

The 2016 Ford Explorer has received some minor updates that add up to some serious improvements. The front lights and grille have changed only slightly, yet make a big difference. They elevate what was already a good design into a great one.

The Explorer is a full size SUV that manages to be roomy without being boxy. From a distance it looks quite a lot like a Range Rover, it's only up close and you see the Blue Oval that you see that it's a Ford. The profile is a good one, a high hood, high roofline, fluted side panels, high ground clearance and a slightly sloped roofline all make for a very good looking vehicle.

Inside, the quality is obvious. Lots of soft touch materials, plush upholstery, thick supportive seating, a commanding driving position and lots of technology are the least you can expect. Add in decent cargo space, lots of storage and a touchscreen and you have a winning recipe on your hands.

Engine and transmission

There are three engine options for the 2016 Ford Explorer. The standard engine is a 3.5-litre V6 that delivers 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a turbocharged version of that V6 that delivers 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and finally is an optional 2.3-litre turbo four that delivers 270 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. All use a six speed automatic transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels.

All of these engines are refined, reliable and resolute in their power delivery. They are smooth and all manage to give good gas mileage. The transmission is slick and always on time, offering a very competent combination.

2016 Ford Explorer trims

The 2016 Ford Explorer has five trim levels, base, XLT, Limited, Sport and Platinum. The base Explorer offers 18 inch alloy wheels, auto lighting, LED lighting, privacy glass, reversing camera, air conditioning, power driver's seat, 4.2 inch display, Ford Sync, cruise control and six speaker CD audio.

The rest of the trim levels offer a huge amount of options including climate control, upgraded brakes, leather interior, navigation, front camera, sport suspension, keyless entry and ignition and so much more. The complete features list for the 2016 Ford Explorer is too long to list here!

The 2016 Ford Explorer is the best model yet. As a three row SUV, it has everything you need to drive in comfort and safety. All wrapped up in a high quality package.
