2015 Ford Edge wins U.S. Top Safety Pick

2015 Ford Edge wins U.S. Top Safety Pick

We always
knew the 2015 Ford Edge was special but this just proves it. The U.S. Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has just awarded one of our favourite
crossovers Top Safety Pick.

The Edge
achieved a Good score in the moderate-overlap front, side, roof strength, and
head restraints categories. It also received an Acceptable score for the
notoriously difficult small-overlap crash test. This gives it a Top Safety
Pick, just short of the Top Safety Pick+. Had it had automatic braking, we
think it would have clinched it.

did say the 2015 Ford Edge performed well in that small-overlap test and that
the airbags were good and that the driver would have escaped serious injury.
The negative was that the seatbelt allowed the head and torso to move too far
forward, which brought the score down a bit.

2015 Ford Edge

The 2015
Ford Edge got a complete redesign for the model year that brought it right up
to date and into character with the rest of Ford's lineup. The design intent
was to give it sedan driving manners and wagon passenger and cargo space in a
tidy crossover body. In all of that, we think it succeeds.

The design
is modern with a big grille, high hood, raked windshield, sloped roof and tidy
back end. Fluted panels are everywhere and a set of good-sized alloy wheels
complete the look. A small roof tip spoiler is an option on some trims which
makes a lot of difference to the profile for such a small item.

Inside, materials
have been upgraded across the board from the previous model. New soft touch
materials are everywhere and the cabin feels much better for it. Thanks to a
longer chassis, there is more passenger space than before too, adding to the

Under the
hood is one of three engines. A turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder that
produces 245 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, a 3.5-litre NA engine that produces
280 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque and a 2.7-litre V6 that produces 315 hp and 350
lb-ft of torque. All use a six speed automatic transmission to send power to
the front or all wheels.

The Edge
comes in four trims, SE, SEL, Titanium and Sport. They offer everything from 20
inch alloy wheels, automatic lighting, keyless entry and ignition, panoramic
sunroof, hands-free tailgate to LED lighting and navigation.

The 2015
Ford Edge is a fantastic crossover that delivers on everything you might want
of it. It looks great, has plenty of interior space, offers a great driving
position and drives like a quality sedan. What more could you need?
