Is the 2022 Lincoln Navigator the Best Luxury SUV this Year?

I got to spend a little time with a 2022 Lincoln Navigator last week. The luxury SUV has quite the presence and isn’t afraid to be noticed, yet it’s also quite composed and a nice car to be around.

The big SUV is Lincoln’s answer to a Range Rover or Audi Q7 and delivers a genuinely impressive driving experience.

Whether you’re driving or being driven, there are few nicer ways to be transported.

It’s comfortable, stable on the road and handles rough surfaces and potholes with breezy nonchalance.

Navigator design

There isn’t much you can do with an SUV body shape to make it more svelte, but what Lincoln has done is make it round and friendly.

No sharp edges, no overtly masculine areas and a lack of obvious efforts to make it imposing makes a real difference.

The design is smooth, with a big front end, simple lighting, panel detailing down the profile and a very long wheelbase that offers the promise of acres of interior space.

Inside, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator is as comfortable as you imagine it will be.

It’s huge when you look at it but not when you drive it.

The driving position is cosseted, with a large wheel and touchscreen and a substantial installation along the transmission tunnel, almost separating you from the rest of the vehicle.

The leather upholstery is lovely and supple, with seats offering that Goldilocks balance between being firm and supportive and plush.

As you would expect, there’s plenty of passenger space in its three rows. Both head and leg room are generous, with adults being able to sit comfortably in every row without compromising comfort.

Under the hood

Under the hood of the 2022 Lincoln Navigator is a 3.5-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine that delivers 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque.

It uses a 10 speed automatic transmission to drive the rear or all wheels.

The engine is quiet and smooth, with only the occasional whoosh of a turbo. Power is delivered steadily throughout the range, with the odd little push as a turbo kicks in for real.

It’s a sublime drive that remains smooth despite huge wheels, in part, thanks to the plush suspension.

As this is a Lincoln, technology is everywhere. In particular, safety tech. You get blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control and active lane control as standard.

You can also get head-up display and a surround-view camera system, automatic parking assist and Lincoln’s new Activeglide drive assistance setup.

If you travel long distances or transport a large family around, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator is a great way to do it.

Sure, it’s more expensive than a minivan but you’ll come out on top of most accidents. The heft of the Navigator means in a collision with anything less than a semi, your family will be safe.

All while being wafted around in leather-upholstered comfort.
