Kia has unveiled the successor to the successful Sedona, the 2022 Kia Carnival. The name brings the vehicle in line with other renamed models in an effort to standardize them across regions. The car looks great, the name we’re not so sure of.
The new vehicle also forms part of Kia’s strategy of moving upmarket. They seem to want to distance themselves from the value segment which they dominate and venture more into premium territory.
While we aren’t sure of the direction, the design of the Carnival sure hits the right note!
“The Kia Carnival is here to disrupt a staid segment and proves once again what is possible when conventions are shattered,” said Sean Yoon, the president and CEO of Kia Motors North America.
“With its SUV-like character, our new multi-purpose vehicle delivers a combination of premium design, intelligent packaging, and an abundance of innovation in safety and technology. For these reasons, the Carnival is the first vehicle to proudly wear our all-new Kia badge and is a bold signal of things to come.”
The 2022 Kia Carnival is a new SUV-like design with new grille, new lighting and new appearance. It’s more Range Rover than Kia and looks all the better for it. We love the design of modern Kia but this takes it in a whole new direction.
It has a new grille, new badge and entirely new front end. It’s more upright and more angular than other models and if you removed the badge, it would be easy to think this was a special edition Range Rover or Land Rover Discovery.
Even though it looks like an SUV, it’s still a people mover and retains the side sliding doors to prove it.
Inside, the cabin has definitely been taken up a notch. There is lots of technology up front including digital displays, a 12.3” touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging and USB ports.
Upholstery is all top quality with comfortable seating, optional rear TV screens, Passenger Talk, a new voice system so front passengers can talk with rear passengers and a camera so parents can monitor kids in back.
Engine and mechanicals
The 2022 Kia Carnival is driven by a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 290 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. It uses an eight speed automatic transmission to send power to the wheels. Unfortunately, AWD is not an option.
It’s a shame there is currently no AWD as most of the competition offers it. There is also no hybrid or electric model as yet. Although we have to give it time as this is a new model reveal.
We do expect some kind of electrified motor at some point as the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica both offer that option.
With great SUV-like looks, the 2022 Kia Carnival is sure to be successful. Keep an eye on Grimsby Kia, 435 South Service Road Grimsby, ON L3M 4E8 for news.
