July is a good month for Dodge so far. First, the automaker tops the JD Power Initial Quality Study and now the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is announced. It isn’t all Dodge is up to this week either!

We have known a new Durango was coming for a while. We also knew a Hellcat variant of some kind was on the way. We just didn’t expect it to take this form.

The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat has been given the full treatment. Rather than using an all-new platform as we had thought, we have an improved version of the existing platform with a new look. We also get the full Hellcat experience with the supercharged V8 engine.

With the performance numbers it has, the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is now the most powerful SUV in the world.

I have always liked the look of the Durango. It’s a no-nonsense SUV that looks good, has enough of a hint of muscle car to feel cool and has all the practicality you expect from a three row SUV.

The most obvious change is the look. We have a new front and rear design, new grille and lower fascia, new rear spoiler and unique alloy wheels. There are no fog lights up front, the space being given over to air vents for the engine.

Inside, the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat has a new interior finish with new console, new centre stack, new touchscreen and the flat bottomed steering wheel we see in the Challenger Hellcat. There is also the Performance Pages app for controlling the car and Hellcat logos throughout the interior.

The new look is a good one. I particularly like the new grille and front light arrangement. It’s very modern without being too angular or off-putting. The grey colour with black stripes in the image looks pretty good too.

Under the skin

Under the hood of the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat is the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine. It produces 710 hp and 645 lb-ft of torque and send it to all four wheels. It uses the same Torqueflite eight speed automatic transmission as other Hellcats.

The engine has been provided with forged steel crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods, piston-cooling oil jets, block-cooling water jackets, variable-pressure fuel pumps and a new cold air scoop for the supercharger. The exhaust is also as free-flowing as possible too.

To keep everything under control, the Durango uses Pirelli Scorpion Zero all-season tires, revised suspension from the SRT and Brembo brakes. The suspension has been tweaked to improve handling, reduce body roll, reduce rebound and offer greater comfort.

Dodge seems to be riding high right now. The automaker has not only put their money where their mouth is by winning customer hearts but has also delivered for performance lovers too!

The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat will go on sale in the fall with the order book opening within the next few weeks.
