After seeing teaser images of the Seltos a couple of weeks ago, Kia have finally unveiled the model properly at an event in Delhi, India. The 2020 Kia Seltos is a compact crossover designed to slot into the existing lineup under the current crossover models. It’s a compact crossover but with enough room for all the family.
The 2020 Kia Seltos is an upright design that reminds me of the Ford Edge. It’s of a similar size but has the tiger nose up front instead of the blue oval and some design flourishes on the front fascia that makes it stand out. The front end is high and not very aero but does look nice.
A squared off front includes angled lighting and a high ride height. An angular hood flows into a raked windshield and over a flat roof round toward the rear. Another pair of angular lights adorns the back with a chrome bar in the centre and twin pipes at the base.
Inside, the cabin appears of a good size despite this being a compact. We don’t know much about the interior yet as Kia have yet to publicize any details and there are no spy shots that I can see. There are a few teaser sketches around but they don’t say much either.
Engines and drivetrain
The 2020 Kia Seltos is a global model and will have three engine options. There’s a 1.6-litre turbo four that produces 175 hp, a 2.0-litre NA engine with 147 hp and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel with 134 hp. These engines will use either a six speed automatic, seven speed dual clutch or CVT transmission depending in the market. No mention of a manual option so far.
There was also no mention of drive. The configuration hints at front wheel drive but AWD may be an option. Kia did say that the familiar Drive Mode Select system with Normal, Eco and Sport modes will be featured.
For now, the 2020 Kia Seltos is destined for the Asian market but Kia did say this is a global model that should be made available further afield. No mention was made for Canada but as Kia sell well here, it’s a distinct possibility. I don’t think we will see the diesel engine but the turbo and the 2.0-litre would be a shoe-in for the current Kia range.
As buyers are shifting ever more towards crossovers, this compact will suit the audience perfectly. Small enough to drive around the city, frugal enough to be cost-effective to run yet powerful enough to not leave you wanting.
