The 2017 Kia Forte plays catch-up with other models in the Kia range with a more refined engine, more safety tech, a new S trim level and better quality all round. We got a look at this new Kia at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show but now we know a little more.
The compact Forte comes as a sedan, 2 door Koup and the Forte5 hatchback. It’s a great looking car, with sleek lines and a smooth profile. A new tiger nose and new front bumper update the looks of the sedan a bit while new lights at the rear bring the Forte more in line with the rest of the family. The Forte5 now has a smaller front grille, making it a much nicer car to look at.
Inside, the simple interior works well for having less. We are great proponents of keeping cabins simple and effective and the 2017 Kia Forte takes this to heart. There is everything you need, but none of what you don’t. The front is tidy, sporty and comfortable. The driver’s position is ergonomic and comfortable and all the controls are just where you need them to be. In the back, the seats are comfortable and headroom is decent for a compact car.
Under the skin
Under the hood of the sedan the 1.8-litre engine has been replaced with a 2.0-litre. The first version is a new version of the new inline four cylinder while the second has direct injection. The turbocharged 1.6-litre engine that currently powers some Forte will also be available.
Power figures have yet to be officially announced, the previous version of that first engine was rated at 173 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque last year so we expect something around that level. The turbo 1.6 delivers 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque and we expect figures around that this year too. Both engines will use a six speed automatic or manual transmission to send power to the front wheels.
The new S trim sits midrange and offers some new options for 2017. It adds sports tuned suspension, 16 inch alloys, LED running lights, a rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tip.
The Forte5 gets some new technology too. It now offers projector beam headlights and remote keyless entry with trunk opener, leather seats, LED taillights, heated front seats, keyless entry/start, and perimeter lighting with front-door pocket lighting and Kia UVO3 infotainment, spending on the trim you buy.
We have yet to drive the new 2017 Kia Forte but it won’t be long. Manufacturing is already underway at Kia’s new Monterey plant in Mexico with the first deliveries expected late this spring.
