The SUV is still our go-to vehicle of choice regardless of
where in Canada we live. The 2016 Jeep Cherokee hopes to build on that love
with what is a favourite of ours. An SUV with a 30 year heritage and one that
still manages to off-road even though it has moved firmly into school run
2016 Jeep Cherokee design
The exterior certainly does make you look twice doesn’t it?
The new interpretation of the traditional Jeep grille and lights is interesting
to say the least. We like the grille part and we’re getting used to the
headlights, but it is polarizing opinion. Fortunately, the rest of the design
is more straightforward.
A high ground clearance, nice and tidy front end, raked
windshield, rising beltline and soft panels make for a very nice profile.
Inside, the cabin is a very nice place to be. The materials,
design and layout is excellent. The technology is nicely laid out, the driving
position is a good one and there is enough room all round for adult passengers.
It has a nice solid feel that will resonate well with buyers of all stripes.
Engine and transmission
There are two engines available for the 2016 Jeep Cherokee .
A 2.4-litre inline four that produces 184 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque and a
3.2-litre V6 that produces 271 hp and 239 lb-ft of torque. Both use a ZF nine
speed transmission to power the front or all wheels.
This being a Jeep, there are also three different 4WD
systems on offer too. The Jeep Active Drive I and Jeep Active Drive II and Jeep
Active Drive Lock offer variations of off road ability depending on the trim
Both engines are very capable and the transmission seems
silky smooth across all gears. Even the four cylinder is comfortable around
town and on the highway and both are supposed to offer decent gas mileage too.
We liked them both!
2016 Jeep Cherokee trims
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee comes in Sport, Latitude, Altitude, Limited
and Trailhawk trims. Sport, Latitude, Altitude all add features as you would
expect, Limited is the top of the range and Trailhawk is the off road
specialist. All offer a huge range of standard equipment and options.
The Cherokee Sport offers the 2.4-litre engine, cruise
control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, 5 inch touchscreen, 3.5 inch
dashboard display, hill start assist, stability control and CD audio with
Bluetooth. From there you can build a Cherokee with everything from navigation
to reversing camera, park assist to blind sport monitoring.
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is a solid update to a solid SUV.
With thirty years under its belt, this vehicle is truly tried and tested. We
think its excellent. See the 2016 Jeep Cherokee for yourself at Parkway Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Mississauga, 2260 Battleford Road, Mississauga, ON, L5N
