The Kia factory in West Point, Georgia celebrated its one millionth model with a presentation. That model was a Kia Sorento SXL in white.
Considering the plant has only been open four years, to hit the 1 million mark already is quite the achievement.
Built in 2009, the West Point factory was built with $1 billion worth of investment money to build the Sorento model. The factory is referred to as KMMG, for Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia.
The Optima was added three years later in 2012 with another $100 million in investment. The plant currently produces 360,000 cars per year and brings essential employment and cash to the local economy.
“Building one million vehicles in less than four years is a tremendous achievement and one that each one of our more than 3,000 team members can take great pride in,” said Byung Mo Ahn, Group President and CEO for Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia.
“People are the heart and soul of this company, and our team members’ commitment to world class quality is one of the major driving forces behind Kia’s unprecedented sales and market share growth in the U.S. over the last few years.”
Kia as an automaker has come a very long way since it began being visible in Western markets. Since hiring Peter Schreyer from Audi, the design, quality and performance of Kia cars has increased steadily. Now they are seen less as an Asian import or low-budget car and more of a mainstream competitor. That’s exactly where Kia wanted to be.
An uncompromising attention to detail and enviable quality control has brought a once niche Asian automaker into the North American market and made them a force to be reckoned with!
